An 18-year-old man who confessed to shooting a teenage boy over his $150 chain was at the Broward County Main Jail on Friday in Fort Lauderdale, and he faced seven charges in a capital life case, records show.
Trentny Leak Jr. confessed to shooting the teen who was walking home on Oct. 13 in Margate, according to a police arrest report. Surveillance video recorded it from 527 South Rock Island Road, according to police.
Leak told a detective that his cousin was driving his mother’s black 2010 Nissan Altima when a man who was with them gave him a gun and “encouraged” him to steal the victim’s necklace, according to a police report.
“Leak was holding the handgun in his right hand and the necklace in his left hand … pulled the necklace with such force that he slammed [the victim’s] face into the side of the vehicle … unable to break the necklace … he pulled one more time before he let the necklace go,” a police officer wrote, according to a report.
Leak confessed to pulling the trigger of the firearm before his cousin drove away and dropped him off at his home, and the man who had given him the gun ran away with it, according to the police report.
During a phone call on Oct. 14, Leak said the man said that he “got rid of the gun,” but he did not identify the man, according to the arrest report.
The victim told a detective that he was walking home when a man in a black 2010 Nissan Altima asked him how much his necklace was worth, and after he said it had cost $150, offered him a ride, but he declined, according to a police report.
The victim reported that another man in the Nissan Altima pulled out a black firearm, said, “I want it,” and pulled it, and after he managed to free himself, shot him in the stomach, and he fell, according to a police report.
The victim “believed he was going to die because of the gunshot … stated he was then placed into a helicopter and transported to the hospital where he underwent emergency surgery to save his life,” a police officer wrote after meeting with the victim, according to a report.
During a photo lineup on Oct. 20, the victim recognized Leak as the man who had shot him.
“He felt Leak shot him because he was unable to steal his necklace,” a police officer wrote after the lineup, according to a report.
When police officers arrived at his home on Oct. 22, Leak ran, but police officers quickly caught up to him and arrested him, and questioned him, according to the police arrest report.
Court records show Leak faced seven charges: Murder while engaged in a felony offense, armed robbery, first-degree felony with a weapon, two counts of criminal attempt to solicit or conspire to commit a life felony, resisting an officer without violence, and operating a motor vehicle without a valid license.
